talaith | i think hemp is a wonder plant....with so many uses. hemp items are quite expensive though. some good qualities ~ the seeds and oil are high in protein, the fabric has antibacterial attributes and its texture is similar to linen. is it legal to grow hemp in the US? does anyone have experience growing hemp crops? |
Harpyr | it should be legal to grow in the US. I think the timber lobby has alot to do with keeping it illegal. Paper could be much much more sustainably produced with hemp. Asking folks in the US to share their experiences growing hemp could be putting such folks in a potentially sticky situation.. Afterall.. Randall says the CIA watches this site. |
talaith | so sorry! i thought if it were legal to grow hemp, which i honestly don't know (which is the reason i asked), and if the answer were 'yes', then those who grow hemp might like to share. i've heard it's a very easy crop to grow. i stand reprimanded. |
Harpyr | ohmygoodness, dear talaith! Did that seem like a reprimand? I meant it more as a sort of heads up rather than a slap on the wrist of sorts.. So sorry.. this whole authority position thing is kinda wierd for me....but anyway, uh yeah, it is pretty easy to grow....so i've heard.

juniperb | Yup Harypr, rumor has it as such ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot |
pixelpixie | Apparently, It is 'growable' in any soil condition, and will refortify the soil and recondition it to make it hospitable for other crops to be planted again. I hear they planted Hemp seeds all around the Chernobyl site. It has a million and one uses, not just the mind altering kind... of course, that is only it's THC content, not HEMP. It's quality, easily absorbed oil is rich in Essential Fatty Acids... I think as demand increases, the price will rectify. I hope anyway. Let's all be pioneers. ( I am in the process of making stained glass suncatchers of Hemp leaves .) |
pixelpixie | In light of the recent post by Librasparkle , I thought I'd bring this puppy back to the top! (it's in Health and Healing) |

proxieme | re: the THC content: I thought that industrial hemp had a negligble amount (like you'd have to smoke a ton or two to get high)...am I wrong? |
Randall | That's what I heard. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark |
Harpyr | That is correct, prox. That fact further highlights the reasons it is illegal.. not because of trying to keep people off the drug but because we are protecting our timber industry. Heaven forbid we make paper out of something other than our ancient forests and get out of the horrific buisness of planting monocultural forests utterly devoid of diversity and drenched in poisons.. |
proxieme | (The little thumbs-down sign is for unthoughtout "drug control" laws.) Harpyr - Do you know how many/which states have put industrial hemp propositions on the ballot? When? How about their success? How did the nat'l gov't react? Great site (so far, anyway - I haven't explored the whole thing): http://www.rethinkpaper.org/content/legalizehemp.cfm And, ohmygod, so much more: http://www.thehia.org/ http://www.hemptech.com/ http://www.votehemp.com/ http://www.industrialhemp.net/ (I haven't had the time to read any of these yet, but my nights'll be wide open most of this week...) ...I'm quite tired all of a sudden...will be going to bed. G'night. |

Harpyr | hhmmm.. I don't really know the answers to those questions.. It's an issue I've only given some cursory study to.. I *think* there was something on the latest ballot for the decriminalization of marijuana in Alaska but that might have just been hearsay.. I looked through the headlines of the Fairbanks paper and didn't see anything about the issue there...Were it to pass, that might be the sort of thing to convince me to move home. Those look like some good links..I'll have to check em out.. |
raihs | Hemp...well yes it has much lower thc. It uses less water and chemicals than cotton farming, which is a really important point here in oz. Machinery for farming it is the same as sugar cane equipment, so no special new technology is needed. Plastics can be made from it as well as fabric and paper. Much more eco friendly, we gotta wonder why all the beurocratic red tape and lack of support from governments. (we know...it comes down to pleasing the dollar companies and rednecks) ------------------ If i only end up being a notch on your bedpost, let it be a notch with a smiley face /:) |

dorkus_malorkus | Here in California, it's not uncommon to see lots of specialty shops that sell everything from shoes to lip balm - they have some nice stuff |
zoso | I think marijuana is illegal to grow in the US no matter the plant sex. Males grow more THC than females, which is "supposedly" *ahem* the reason the plant is illegal. Personally, I think hemp fabric is scratchy, but hemp oils that go into lip balm and other cosmetics are very nice--and they smell so good! Is it legal in Canada? |
angel_of_hope | Harpyr actually it didnt pass this year, again. BUt are laws still remain the "loosest" in the country .... heres a very good site to visit for the laws in AK .... u can also look up ur local state by going back thru the website ... http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?wtm_view=&Group_ID=4522 ang- |
Harpyr | hey thanks ang! Good to know... turns out I am moving back home to Fairbanks in May.....Some of those laws seem contradictory tho... quote: Possession of less than 25 plants is protected under the Alaska Constitution’s right to privacy (See Ravin v. Alaska).
quote: Maintaining any structure or dwelling, including vehicles, to use for keeping and distributing marijuana, is a felony offense and punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
So what does that mean? You can have less than 25 plants as long as they are outdoors? Or is it okay to have plants in your house as long as you don't plan to distribute them? Laws can be so confusing sometimes.
